The Jay Kumar 3v3 Classic
In memory of Jay Kumar
Jayant (Jay) Kumar was born on Thursday, January 25 th , 2001 to his dad Himanshu and mom
Madhavi. As Jay grew older, he become passionate about the game of basketball. As a member
of the KW Vipers throughout his short career (Novice – Bantam), he was the team’s leader and
top player. Jay was not only an outstanding player, he was liked and respected by all who knew
him.
Midway through the 2013/2014 basketball season, Jay was diagnosed with Diffuse Intrinsic
Pontine Glioma, an extremely rare condition. The disease affects the brain stem and usually
occurs in children aged five to 10.
Nine days after being diagnosed, Jay Kumar passed away on Friday, May 9 th , 2014 surrounded
by his family.
Jay’s former coach Brad Matsugu thought, what better way to memorialize his former player
than a basketball tournament named in his honour. From the creative mind of a parent, the
tournament was given life with the name of the Kumar Classic.
